Timbuktu, Mali

Tibuktu was an intellectual centre in the 15th and 16th centuries, and was responsible for the spreado Islam in many parts of Africa. Constructed out of mud, its architecture emphasises the fact the even simple buildings, can have enough architectural and historic value to warrant inscription on the World Heritage List.
