News: Durham Cathedral voted as ‘Britain’s Favourite’

Durham Cathedral voted as ‘Britain’s Favourite’

Durham Cathedral has been chosen as Britain’s Favourite Cathedral in this year’s LandLove Magazine Awards, overcoming stiff competition to take the top prize.

Now in their third year, the LandLove Magazine Awards are quickly becoming a mark of excellence for heritage sites across the country. A public vote resulted in Durham Cathedral being crowned ‘Britain’s favourite Cathedral’, despite competition from other stunning Cathedral’s such as those at Lincoln, Hereford and Salisbury. Winning the award by public vote is a real marker of how fondly Durham Cathedral is viewed amongst the public.

2016 proved to be another landmark year for Durham Cathedral, with the new multi-million pound exhibition experience Open Treasure opening to visitors in July. With over 700,000 people enjoying the Cathedral’s magnificent Romanesque architecture throughout the year it continues to be one of the most popular heritage sites in the country.

Head of Marketing and Events at Durham Cathedral, Ruth Robson, said: “We are delighted to have been voted ‘Britain’s favourite Cathedral’ in the LandLove Magazine Awards 2016. Durham Cathedral has been a place of worship, welcome and hospitality for almost a millennium. For many people Durham Cathedral continues to be a spiritual home, and our volunteer stewards give a warm and friendly welcome to all.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who voted for Durham Cathedral in the LandLove Magazine Awards 2016, particularly our followers on social media, and we look forward to welcoming even more visitors to Durham Cathedral in 2017.”

Durham Cathedral has also been nominated for Heritage Site of the Year in the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards, and those wishing to vote for Durham Cathedral can do so at countryfile.com/awards before Tuesday 28 February.
