Buddha's Birthday Special Event

Celebrate the most important day in the Buddhist calendar and join us for crafts, meditation, talks on buddhism and traditional Buddha Bathing. Suitable for all the family.

Buddha’s Birthday (also known as Vesak) is celebrated across the world and commemorates the birth of the Buddha in around 563 BCE. Born a prince, Buddha went on to renounce his privileged royal life and become a holy man, ultimately reaching Enlightenment.

Come and see the Museum decorated in spectacular style with paper cranes and coloured lanterns. Enjoy our craft activities, a guided meditation and yoga session led by Buddhist practitioners, talks and a gallery trail and storytelling for children.

Handle some Buddhist objects from the Museum’s collections at our gallery handling station or visit our Buddha Bathing area and pour flower-scented water over a statue of Buddha, symbolising the cleansing of body, speech and thoughts.

All activities are included in the Museum admission price and are suitable for everyone. We look forward to welcoming you to this special day.

  • Drop in (any time between 1 and 4 pm).

Normal admissions prices apply. Adults: £1.50, Concessions and children (5-16): 75p, under 5's, students, Durham University staff, Art Fund and Museums Association: free.
