Lecture by Professor Martin Clayton, Department of Music, Durham University. This lecture is hosted by the Friends of the Oriental Museum, as part of the 2018/19 series.

The multimedia exhibition Khyal: Music and Imagination explores the relationship between Indian music and the visual imagination. Led by Laura Leante and Martin Clayton of Durham's Music Department, in collaboration with the Oriental Museum and Gem Arts and funded by the AHRC, the project invited visual artists based in the UK and India to respond to performances of Indian classical singing in the khyal (lit: imagination) genre. In this talk Professor Clayton will talk about the project's background, inspiration, and process as well as the resulting artworks, illustrated by slides and musical examples.

This lecture is open to all. Lectures are free to Friends. For visitors the cost is £3 (£1 concession).
