Exploring Medieval Identity: Race/Ethnicity/Religion?

9th May 2018, 09:30, IAS Seminar Room, Dr Victoria Turner, University of St Andrews

In this workshop, we will discuss medieval understandings of race, ethnicity and religious difference and consider the difficulties of bridging the divides between modern theoretical approaches and medieval sources, both terminologically and conceptually.

Book your place here.

Dr Turner’s research interests span medieval French and Occitan literature from the twelfth to fifteenth centuries. She is particularly interested in the representation of intercultural contact in medieval France, especially in concepts of race, otherness and identity and how these might intersect with questions of gender, religion and nation. Part of my research has thus also involved the use of theoretical approaches to literature. Her work on difference has led her to explore notions of the marvel and the marvellous.
