Dante in the Arab World

21st February 2018, 18:00, Palace Green Library Learning Centre, Daniel Newman

Tickets for the lecture, wine reception, and tour of the exhibition 'Hell, Heaven and Hope: A Journey through life and the afterlife with Dante' will cost £12.50. Booking is essential.

Lecture by Professor Daniel Newman, Durham University.

The Islamic references in Dante’s Divine Comedy have caused considerable controversy in both the West and the Arab world. What were Dante’s sources of Arab-Islamic culture and how would they have influenced him? This issue particularly impacted on the first Arabic versions of the Divine Comedy in the 20th century. As translators grappled with rendering anti-Islamic elements for a Muslim readership, Dante became embroiled in the debate around Islamophobia.

A new exhibition at Palace Green Library will follow the story of Dante’s Divine Comedy. Reflecting the entire human experience, Dante’s work considers the power of resilience through difficult times and ultimately offers a message of hope.

Daniel Newman holds the Chair of Arabic at the University of Durham. His research has focused on Arabic geographical and travel literature, the history of translation in the Arab world, and mediaeval Islamic medicine and food. His publications include An Imam in Paris (2nd rev. edition 2012) and The Sultan's Sex Potions: Arab Aphrodisiacs in the Middle Ages (2014).
