Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos

Carved panel from the cloister at the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, Spain, 12th century. The carved panels in this building are thought to be the work of the same craftsman who worked on the Abbey of St. Pierre de Mossaic in France. This is not unlikely: skilled craftsmen moved around from one project to another. Santo Domingo de Silos is on the much-travelled pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in North-East Spain, which was dotted with important religious buildings, and would have been an obvious route for talented craftsmen in search of work to take.
